When developing a cohesive visual brand identity, figuring out how to choose brand colors is probably one of the first things you think about. And for good reason! Color plays an incredibly powerful role in the way we perceive, recognize, and remember brands and products.
Picking your own brand colors feels deceptively simple—until you’re three hours deep into a color theory rabbit hole and more confused than when you started.
But your brand color palette isn’t just about what looks pretty. It’s about what communicates the right thing to the right people before you say a single word. Color is your first impression, your emotional handshake, your subconscious connection.
So let’s talk about how to choose brand colors that work—strategically, intentionally, and in a way that still feels unmistakably you.
Color psychology is real, and it can help guide you in the right strategic direction. So before you pick a single hex code, it helps to understand the general emotional associations behind common color families:
Keep in mind, these are just general guidelines, not rules. As always, context matters! Context matters and the goal of creating your own brand is alignment, not conformity.
This is where most people skip ahead, and where things can quickly go sideways. Before you open Pinterest and start scrolling for inspiration, it’s critical you identify and articulate your brand personality.
When I work with clients, we select 3-5 personality traits that encapsulate the essence of their brand. These personality traits serve as a compass for the entire visual brand direction, including color.
For example, if the selected brand personality traits are “Bold, Groovy, and Unapologetic,” a palette of warm neutrals would be completely out of line with what we want to convey. Conversely, a brand that wants to be seen as “Romantic, Warm, and Nostalgic,” won’t be served well by a color palette of punchy, primary colors.
To identify your own brand personality traits, consider the following questions:
A comprehensive brand palette typically includes four to six colors, each with a specific job:
Falling in love with a color palette on a mood board is one thing, but seeing it in action is another. The biggest mistake I see brand DIYers make is not choosing color pairings with enough contrast.
If your color palette doesn’t have enough contrast between colors, something is going to look off, even if the individual colors are beautiful.
What’s more, contrast plays a critical role in readability of text, especially on digital screens. Low contrast color pairings make it difficult for people to read text on your screen or in some cases, make it completely illegible.

I always recommend testing out your color pairings to ensure they meet standard accessibility guidelines. I use the free tool on Coolors; you can check it out here!
Your color palette is an essential part of your brand strategy.
And choosing the right brand colors shouldn’t simply be based on what you like or what your competitors are using. It should clearly communicate your brand’s personality and be one of the most recognizable things about your brand!
So if you’re sitting here thinking, “I hear you, but I genuinely don’t know where to start”—that’s exactly what I’m here for. Color strategy is baked into every single brand project I take on, and I’d love to help you curate a color palette that is intentional and built to last.
